He started out playing to traditional Latin rhythms in his early years, but then began exploring avant-garde jazz in the '60s after meeting Don Cherry. He developed a fierce fiery tone as heard on Carla Bley's 'Escalator Over the Hill.' His score for Bernardo Bertolucci's 1972 film "Last Tango in Paris" earned him a Grammy and wider recognition, incl. being the inspiration for the character Zoot in the fictional Muppet band
