#OnThisDay in 1949, Newfoundland officially joined Canada, becoming the 10th province of the country. The confederation came after a referendum was held a year prior, asking Newfoundlanders on whether they wanted to stay independent or join Canada. Their confederation did not come easy. Throughout the 19th century, there were multiple attempts to have the now province join Canada, which were unsuccessful. In the final days of Newfoundland and Labrador’s fight over its future, something happened that has never sat right with the people of this country. Ballots from the 1948 Confederation referendum—reportedly numbering in the thousands—were destroyed in St. John’s. According to long-standing accounts, this destruction occurred at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and was carried out under orders connected to the Commission of Government. At the centre of the allegation is the simple, unsettling fact that
