Pankration was the fiercest event in the ancient Olympics, mixing wrestling, boxing, and survival. In 564 BC, Arrichion of Phigalia fought for his third title. In the final, his opponent put him in a chokehold. As Arrichion’s sight faded, his trainer yelled, “Fight for glory, even in death!” Arrichion twisted and kicked, breaking his opponent’s ankle.
