In the early 1900s, more than 1,000 African Americans began arriving in a place called Amber Valley, about 160 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. Amber Valley, Alta. was once a thriving community of Black homesteaders, whose history is well-documented in a local museum. What’s not included, however, is the related history of the nearby Métis community who lived and traded with the Black settlers for generations.
