A federal appeals court has paused a judge’s order to bring a Turkish Tufts University student from a Louisiana immigration detention center back to New England this week so it can consider an emergency motion filed by the government.

A federal appeals court judge issued a stay on a district court's order to transfer a detained Tufts University student to Vermont, according to an order filed Monday.

The federal government is fighting a judge’s ruling that Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk, who wrote an essay about Israel and the war in Gaza and is fighting deportation, must be transferred back to an immigration facility in Vermont from Louisiana.
