The Social Security Administration (SSA) will announce the 2025 COLA on Oct. 10, 2024. That's the day the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its inflation data for September. The CPI-W for September is the only missing piece of information needed for SSA to calculate next year's adjustment.

The Social Security Administration is less than two weeks away from announcing its cost of living adjustment (COLA), the annual bump in recipients' payments to help them deal with inflation.

However, that number could wiggle upward or downward, depending on how an official inflation reading for September shakes out. Either way, though, you should expect 2025's Social Security COLA to be lower than the 3.2% raise that came through at the start of 2024.

Technically, the Social Security Administration will apply the 2025 COLA to your December 2024 payment. But since you receive Social Security checks in the month after the month they're due, you won't get your first payment with the COLA until January 2025.
