Another powerful system is expected to sweep across a wide swath of the U.S., bringing heavy rain to Southern California, heavy snow to parts of the West and Midwest, and more snow and freezing rain to the Northeast.

Weather Impact meteorologists are tracking the potential for winter weather in Hampton Roads, but the forecast remains unclear.

Snow and ice Saturday afternoon and evening in the Lehigh Valley, Pocono Mountains and northern New Jersey could cause slick driving conditions, the National Weather Service said.

Snow will fall across most of the tri-state area Saturday night and into Sunday morning. A total of 2 to 5 inches are possible in New York City with 5 to 8 inches possible in inland areas north of the five boroughs.

Around 2:30 p.m., some snow was showing up on weather radar in the Garden State, but a dry layer of air in the lower atmosphere was causing the snow to evaporate before reaching the ground. That’s a phenomenon known as virga.

While much of the nation deals with snow storms and icy conditions, California braces for heavy rain and potential flooding.

While much of the mid-Atlantic was digging out from a winter storm that brought heavy snow to the Washington, D.C., area, a second storm is expected to follow, bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain along a more northerly track from Colorado to Maine.
