Vanderbilt athletics had a great weekend overall. It did get started off on the wrong foot, however. Vanderbilt volleyball played Georgia Friday night in Nashville, but lost 3-1. The two teams fought neck and neck the first two sets as Georgia took the first set 25-23 and Vanderbilt took the second set 25-22.

Vanderbilt football is still outside the top 10 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, moving up one spot to No. 11 after a 17-10 win over Missouri. In the Oct. 26 edition of the poll, the Commodores (7-1, 2-1 SEC) are the fifth-ranked SEC team, behind Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss.

As the weeks go on, the stakes get higher. Next week in Austin, Texas is no different as Vanderbilt looks to likely eliminate Texas from the College Football Playoff conversation. But in its own right, Vanderbilt looks to stay solely in the playoff conversation.

Vanderbilt does not control its own destiny for the SEC title game because Alabama and Texas A&M are both undefeated in conference play and do not play each other. One-loss Georgia would also win a tiebreaker over the Commodores unless Florida loses to both Kentucky and Tennessee and LSU beats Oklahoma.

Freshman Matt Zollers got his first taste of being the guy for Mizzou, going 14-for-23 for 138 yards despite entering late in the game. The Tigers ended the game on the 1-yard line, inches away from a game-tying score.
