Two federal judges have ruled that President Donald Trump must use contingency funds to keep SNAP benefits going during the federal government shutdown.

It’s not clear how soon assistance could reach people and the rulings could be appealed, The Associated Press reported.

The potential SNAP benefit delay could increase growing hunger crisis in Texas, a state which has the highest population of food insecure people in the U.S.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, is the country’s largest anti-hunger program. Teixeira argued that the ongoing government shutdown is “exposing serious problems” in the program, which is set to expire on Friday.

In Texas, 3.5 million Texans — including 1.7 million children — rely on SNAP, also referred to as food stamps, each month.
