A federal judge considering whether to indefinitely block President Donald Trump’s executive order banning transgender service members described it on Tuesday as having “unadulterated animus” toward transgender Americans.

In a sometimes-fiery hearing, a judge said the Trump administration’s assertion that troops’ pronouns are harming military readiness is “frankly ridiculous.”

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes blasted President Donald Trump’s executive order banning transgender people from serving in the military on Tuesday. Reyes called the order’s assertion that trans pronoun use undermines troop effectiveness “frankly ridiculous” and evidence of Trump’s “unadulterated animus” against trans individuals.

Federal judge blocked the Trump administration from enforcing executive order that was expected to lead to a significant curtailment of transgender service members.

A federal judge sparred with the Justice Department over the breadth of President Trump’s executive order effectively barring transgender people from serving openly in the military during a contentious hearing Tuesday over whether to block the ban indefinitely.
