A Woodland man is presumed dead after a boat capsized on the Columbia River near Hood River, Oregon. Six others were rescued from the wreckage.

A boat captain who went missing on the Columbia River late Wednesday morning after his boat capsized is presumed to be dead, according to the Hood River Sheriff's Office. As of Thursday evening, the search for the boater, identified as Michael Shufeldt of Woodland, Washington, is now being described as a recovery mission.

Shufeldt was one of seven people on the boat when “rapidly deteriorating weather conditions” descended on the river and a large wave washed over the stern, sinking the 24-foot vessel Wednesday shortly after 11 a.m., the sheriff’s office said. Rescuers who arrived within 15 minutes of receiving a 911 call plucked six of the people out of the water.
