North Texas food banks see surging demand amid federal government shutdown, SNAP funding cuts
Late Tuesday afternoon, Dallas County and Dallas City officials decided to make a big donation to help North Texans struggling to put food on the table.
The Dallas Morning News has compiled a list of food banks across North Texas where residents can find support.
Millions of Texans are expected to be impacted by the halt in SNAP benefits next month, as a result of the government shutdown. Austin-area food banks stay open to help those facing food insecurity.
"We've never in the 18 years of Minnie's Food Pantry being here, in the 31 million meals we've served, had to turn away a person," Chery Jackson said. "Am I concerned about it today? Absolutely."
AUSTIN, Texas — The need is growing as the government shutdown is set to become the longest in U.S. history. Drivers packed the parking lot of I.I. Nelson Field in northeast Austin Tuesday night as they waited to get turkey and food supplied by the Central Texas Food Bank.
As the federal government shutdown continues, food banks and community organizations are under more pressure to meet the increased need for food assistance and resources. Dallas County commissioners approved a $1 million donation to the North Texas Food Bank to help address that need.
The calls to the Republican governor came as the food stamp program was set to run out of funding amid the government shutdown.
