San Francisco’s new mayor has been busy. On Thursday, one day after being inaugurated, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the city would implement an immediate hiring freeze to try and bring the city’s record budget deficit under control.

Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit executive Daniel Lurie was sworn in Wednesday as the 46th mayor of San Francisco. He vowed a "new era of accountability, service and change."

Within minutes on Wednesday morning, San Francisco got a new mayor — and a new plan for an emergency declaration intended to combat the fentanyl scourge that has killed thousands of people in the city over the past five years and has turned some neighborhoods into sidewalk drug markets.
