Several buildings at Texas Tech University in Lubbock were evacuated Wednesday night after officials said an explosion in a manhole near a substation caused multiple fires that could be seen emerging from underground across parts of the campus and widespread power outages in the area.

An explosion on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock set off fires and power outages Wednesday, leading school officials to issue evacuation orders for several buildings and cancel classes for the rest of the week.

Emergency services were called to the university on Wednesday evening after green flames were seen erupting from a manhole cover.
