Hundreds of thousands of people are still without power, but companies are providing ways for them to communicate.

Some Verizon users said on social media platform X their phones were stuck in ‘SOS’ mode. Tens of thousands of Verizon users reported outages for the wireless carrier’s services across the U.S. on Monday,

Verizon has confirmed that its cell service is beginning to come back online following a massive outage affecting some of its mobile phone customers.

Verizon phones across Illinois and Chicago were reported stuck in SOS mode following thousands of reports of a Verizon outage nationwide. As of around 7 a.m. Monday morning, hundreds of Chicago reports of Verizon outages poured into the website Downdetector.

Verizon is adding satellite texting as soon as this fall, but not for all devices Phones enter SOS mode when not connected to their carrier network, either because they are in an area with poor coverage or because of a technical problem.

Verizon customers reported their mobile phone service wasn't working in cities across the U.S., giving them only SOS mode.

Verizon and AT&T customers have reported their phones being stuck in SOS mode due to what appears to be a widespread outage.
