For some voters on Tuesday the trimming and delay of benefits under the federal food aid program known as SNAP was helping inform who would get their support.

The state is making another infusion of emergency food aid as 3 million New Yorkers face the looming expiration of nutrition assistance for the first time since the federal program began. The state is allocating $65 million to the state’s nutrition and farm-to-foodbank programs under a new emergency declaration,

New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday declared a state of emergency to issue $65 million for assistance to food banks as federal funding for the national food stamp program is set to lapse on November 1.

Thankfully, two federal judges ruled nearly simultaneously Friday that President Donald Trump’s administration must continue to fund SNAP, the nation’s

County social service agencies have been directing families to lists of food banks in their communities in case they run out of food. The Food Bank of Central New York, which serves 11 counties, has ordered 20% more food this month to help pantries stock up.

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a “food emergency” across the state Thursday as the federal government says SNAP benefits will run dry this weekend amid the federal shutdown.
