The UK has detained the first small-boat migrants under a “one in, one out” returns treaty with France, as pressure grows on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to stem the influx of asylum-seekers across the English Channel.

The Government’s “one in, one out” deal to return people to France in a bid to tackle Channel crossings is set to begin. The treaty was laid in Parliament on Tuesday (August 5), and will take effect from Wednesday (August 6) with detentions expected in the coming days.
