Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has restored but downgraded an independent, internal Pentagon think tank focused on future wars, seven months after dismantling the agency in the name of accountability and efficiency, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post and people familiar with the matter.

The Defense Department has announced a “new media” press corps largely comprised of conservative news outlets after restrictions introduced for journalists covering the agency led many to walk out rather than agree to the agency’s demands.

The year was 1992. The day was Dec. 8. The scene was the Pentagon briefing room, where a neophyte reporter with no military experience stood in front of a large wall-sized National Geographic world map and prepared to explain what was happening in Somalia to an international audience.

Dozens of reporters stationed at the Pentagon walked out this week and surrendered their access badges rather than sign on to new rules imposed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth they said would restrict how they do their jobs.
