The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, is the largest federal nutrition-assistance program in the U.S.

With benefits expected to run out Saturday because of the government shutdown, Democratic leaders of 25 states allege that the USDA is required to keep providing funds.

SNAP benefits will vanish on Nov. 1 for more than 42 million Americans. Here are food banks and pantries accepting new clients in the Upstate.

The California Department of Public Health, which administers WIC, says it has gotten additional funds from the USDA and expects “to remain fully operational through Nov. 30."

Those who rely on SNAP to buy groceries for themselves and their families make up about 12% of all grocery sales nationwide, according to the National Grocers Association.

Nevada has joined a lawsuit challenging the United States Department of Agriculture’s upcoming suspension of SNAP benefits, which provide $90 million a month to around 500,000 Nevadans.
