Snow, ice and cold weather have triggered yellow weather warnings across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and parts of England. As the UK welcomed a new year, the country experienced its coldest night of winter so far, with temperatures on 5 January plummeting as low as -13.3oC in Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland.

More than 100 flood warnings are in place for England as yellow warnings for snow and ice are issued for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

A three-day snow warning has been issued by the Met Office for much of Britain, with temperatures set to plunge for the first weekend of 2025. Around 5cm of snow is expected to fall widely across swathes of the Midlands, Wales and northern England, with as much as 20-30cm over high ground in Wales or the Pennines.

Major incidents have been declared in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire after rain brought severe flooding to the Midlands on Monday. Firefighters in Leicestershire received more than 200 calls and rescued 59 people, while Lincolnshire authorities have warned conditions could deteriorate overnight as water ices over.

Weather warnings for snow and ice are in force across much of the UK after severe flooding and snow caused travel disruption and school closures. Most of south-west England and Wales, coastal parts of North Wales and Merseyside and parts of north-west England and the West Midlands have a yellow snow and ice warning in place until 10am today (January 7).
