Five-time major winner Rory McIlroy had a disappointing first round at the US Open and got off to an even worse start in the second.

The U.S. Open is as much a mental test as it is physical. Still, the rules violation Shane Lowry found himself in Friday afternoon at Oakmont was so absurd that he and Rory McIlroy could only laugh at it.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, Nos. 1 and 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking, respectively, will be competing in the Travelers Championship. Scheffler is the defending champion, having defeated Tom Kim in a playoff following a climate protest during the final hole of regulation.

After a sparkling opening nine holes, Rory McIlroy posted his first bogey of the U.S. Open and made a beeline across the concrete bridge that spans the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Not a soul was within 15 feet.
