Corey Conners was among the favorites coming into the U.S. Open, but after a freak accident on Saturday, he had to pull out of the tournament.

Burns shot 69 to finish at 4-under-par 206, one shot clear of J.J. Spaun (69) and Adam Scott (67, matching the day's low round with Carlos Ortiz). Viktor Hovland (70) is 1-under and Ortiz is even par.

The 125th U.S. Open is taking place this week outside of Pittsburgh at Oakmont Country Club, and after a dry, hot start, shower and storm chances will increase for the weekend. Oakmont Country Club is hosting the tournament for a record 10th time this year, with the last one in 2016 when Dustin Johnson won.

Simpson got some company in the Oakmont record books late Friday morning, however, as Victor Perez found the bottom of the cup from the tee on the 192-yard 6th hole, hitting a 7 iron just below the hole and watching as it released straight into the hole for an ace.
