Shares of Nvidia and its suppliers concentrated in Asia dropped after Trump imposed a new export license requirement that would lead to an estimated $5.5 billion charge on the chipmaker's Q1 balance sheet.

Shares in Nvidia and other tech companies slumped after the computer chip maker said that tighter U.S. government controls on its exports of semiconductors used for artificial intelligence will cost it an extra $5.

The restrictions are the first major limits the Trump administration has put on semiconductor sales outside the United States, toughening rules created by the Biden administration.
