The Morgan-Manning House was heavily damaged in 1964 by a disastrous fire. Volunteers who restored the home in 1965 organized as the Western Monroe Historical Society that year, receiving a provisional charter on April 23, 1965. The final charter was granted in 1968 by the University of New York Education Department Board of Regents.

At first, hopes for rebuilding the historic Morgan-Manning House Museum in Brockport were dim. From the outside Tuesday evening, residents feared the worst as flames licked and charred the structure — sacred to generations of village folks.
