Late Friday night, the fire that broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi claimed the lives of at least 10 children, mostly newborns, while 16 others are still battling for life.

Jhansi/Lucknow: A devastating fire at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi claimed the lives of 10 newborns, media reports said.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday formed a four-member committee to investigate the fire that broke out in the children’s ward of Jhansi’s Maharani Laxmibai Medical College. The committee has been tasked with identifying the cause of the fire and determining whether any negligence was involved.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said a short circuit caused the fire at the children's ward of a Jhansi medical college that killed 10 newborns. The state government ordered a three-tier probe into the incident.

An ex gratia of ₹5 lakh has been announced for parents of each of the deceased babies and ₹50,000 for each of the injured babies' families.

A massive fire broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Jhansi Medical College late 15 evening. The tragic fire incident took the lives of 10 innocent newborn babies who were admitted to the NICU ward.
