The man accused of assassinating the top Democrat in the Minnesota House held deeply religious and politically conservative views, telling a congregation in Africa two years ago that the U.S. was in a "bad place" where most churches didn't oppose abortion.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar said that authorities believe Vance Boelter, the suspect in a pair of "politically motivated" shootings, is still in the Midwest, noting that authorities have put out an alert in South Dakota.
Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded in politically motivated shootings early Saturday, Gov. Tim Walz said. Authorities have also identified a suspect who is still at large.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Vance Luther Boelter, posed as a law enforcement officer to gain access to the victims' homes.
The assailant, who is still at large, was identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter by the state's public safety commissioner.
